I had first met Stephanie and Elliot this past winter. They were a referral from another DJ, Victor Salazar at Mixwell Events. We had originally met at a south side Starbucks and I felt we were a good match. They really were a fun, laid back couple. Exactly the type of client that I love to work with. They both lived in Washington DC so most of our communication was done via email or Skype.
Their reception started at 6pm at the Holiday Inn Merchandise Mart. Working with the staff, Barb, the banquet manager and Gus, the banquet captain, was a dream. Everything flowed smoothly. We did have a few last minute changes to the order of the events and we all adapted to the new timeline and worked together to make it all come to life.
At the end of the night when I was to play the last song at 11:15 per managements instructions, I was given permission to continue to 11:30. (It is very rare for a hall to allow overtime.) They even let me due an encore song after the entire crowd started chanting “One more song!, one more song!” It really was a fun crowd and they all seemed to enjoy themselves.
DThis past weekend was culmiation of months of hard work. Midwest DJs Live 5 finally came to pass. I had the honor of being on the board of directors and was involved with planning and promoting the event. For those who who are not aware of what DJ conferences like this are all about, they are not much different than any other industry. They include industry specific vendors along with networking and educational content. Content typically will include business and performance related topics. Even DJs need continued education to raise the bar! This was my second event this year. The first was Mobile Beat Las Vegas, this past Feb. Midwest DJs, though much smaller, seemed much more productive. The speakers were relevant and informative as well as approachable after their presentations. The venue, Best Western Harborside Convention Center in Kenosha, WI, was accomodating and clean.
This was the 4th Midwest Djs event I have been involved with. It started out as a group of Djs getting together to network and have some fun,.spawned by the Practice and Enjoy event held 6 years ago by Brian S Redd which was fueled by the Youtube community. DJ Big Ron took it over as YouTube DJs Live the following year and it was soon copied by others in the Youtube community across the country. up until this year, it was always an informal gathering in the back room of Buckets pub in Racine Wisco.sin. Last year, however, our attendance numbers and number of vendors wanting to be involved inspired us to think bigger. Thus the newly named Midwest DJs Live 5 was born. It was a great success. We learned a lot this year while putting together the event. We did some things right and could do some other.things better. Next year will be even better!
Its been about a week since the event and I finally have a chance to sit down and write a little something about it. I have had the pleasure to be a part of this event for the last 3 years. Each year has been even better than the year before.
The blind auction event is held every year at Grossinger City Autoplex on the second floor in the Chevy showroom. Grossinger donates the space for the event. It is a very challenging room to get even sound coverage due to its size, odd shape and pillars throughout the room. To combat this, I strategically placed 4 powered speakers in areas where I felt they would cover the largest space (two of them, which were over 150 feet from where I was to set up were linked to the sound system wirelessly.) In most rooms, the corners would be the ideal place, but not in this situation. If I could draw out a floor plan you might begin to understand.
After the sound check was done and I had everything dialed in, people began to file in. The bar was open and they began to peruse the auction items. Among those items was a gift certificate from GN Events for a 3 hour party! Whitney Young has been a good client for years and I felt a contribution was in order.
Coach Billy Poole Harris was the MC for the evening. One thing everyone knows about Billy is he is happiest when he has a microphone in his hand. One by one the silent auction tables were closed. People were complimenting me all night on my song choices. Of course at the end everyone wanted to dance! So a 80’s and 90’s dance set was in order with a few newer tracks mixed in for variety. Whitney Young raised a ton of money for their sports programs and everybody had a great time.
